As someone who stopped oiling her hair in her teens because it wasn’t “cool”, I can confidently say it was the biggest self-care faux pas ever.
Luckily, I’ve gotten back to my roots (pun intended) and am rediscovering the joy of the good old “champi” with my trustee coconut-based hair oil!
When it comes to oiling our hair, there are several common doubts – should we apply oil to wet hair or damp hair, how many times a week should we oil our hair, and the list goes on.
To address all these concerns and share some glorious hair-oil hacks, we curated a 6-step guide to oiling our hair the right way:
1) Select The Right Hair Oil
While there are a myriad of hair oils available in the market, coconut-based hair oils always take the cake. Not only do they suit all hair types, but they also offer unparalleled advantages too. Let’s talk science – coconut-based hair oil is rich in certain molecules which penetrate inside the hair strands as well as the roots of the hair inside the scalp, thereby nourishing the internal cavities and making hair stronger from inside.
In this millennial era where curling, straightening and colouring are more common than ever, coconut-based hair oil also protects our hair strands from color damage, heat damage, chemical damage, hard water damage.
Additionally, coconut-based hair oils also pack a good amount of lauric acid – the ideal ingredient to improving scalp health and reducing hair fall.
Lastly, the aroma of coconut-based hair oil has special molecules which help in stress relief and mental calmness. So, the next you’re reeling from work stress, treat yourself to the good old champi that which elevates blood circulation in scalp and relives tension.
2) Bring Out That Wide-Toothed Comb
Before you start oiling your hair, it’s important to comb them gently with a broad toothed comb in order to brush out all the knots and tangles.
3) Pour & Heat
Depending on the length of your hair, pour about 1-5 pumps of hair oil in a bowl. Next, you should heat the oil slightly, make sure not to make it too hot. Warming the oil enhances the penetration into the scalp, thus enhancing the results. But the key word here is “warm”, it shouldn’t be “hot”.
4) Sectionalise Those Tresses!
For easier application of oil, roughly middle part your hair in two halves using your fingers. If you have curly hair, we advise parting them further, so that every strand gets adequate amount of oil.
5) Here’s The Right Way To Massage Them
Take about one spoon of hair oil in your palm, rub your palms gently and put the hair oil in the parting lines (depending on how many sections you made). Then, start massaging this hair oil in circular motion with all 5 fingers, whilst stimulating the scalp with your fingertips. This helps blood circulation and helps in hair growth. For best results – form an “L” shape with your hands as you massage your roots and scalp. For this, you can place your hands on either side of the head (above your ears) and massage with medium pressure. And hey, make sure not to tangle your hair while you’re at it – this will cause breakage.
6) Wet Versus Dry Hair – When To Oil?
There is no hard and fast rule as far as oiling wet or dry hair concerned – both are okay as long as your scalp is clean, in order to ensure that the oil is absorbed well.
However, in case of coconut-based hair oils (which are heavier in nature), we recommend oiling dry hair so that the large oil molecules penetrate easily and nourish our hair effectively.
Oiling your hair once or twice should be more than enough for thick, healthy, and shiny tresses! We’re bringing coconut-based hair oils back to the dressing table (and our beauty regime), what about you?
