Every sexually active woman has either had a tryst with UTI, or feared it, or had the awfully annoying infection as a recurrent feature. In fact, many women get a bout of UTI almost every time they have sex, and definitely every time they have rough sex. But, this is definitely not the norm. Many women aren’t as susceptible to it.
So, what gives? How is it that some women can get away with pounding all night, and be left with nothing but an afterglow the next morning, while others suffer in agony for days, as if they are being punished by the lords for indulging in carnal pleasures?
Well, it’s not God. And neither is it E.Coli, the bacteria we have so far believed in responsible for UTI. When we have sex, E.Coli which is found in fecal particles finds its way to our urethra, and voila! It is believed that 80% of UTIs are caused by E.Coli. But, as it turns out, there’s another bacteria called Gardnerella Vaginalis, which lives inside your vagina, that actually facilitates a UTI. Although it doesn’t directly cause the infection, it damages the cells on the bladder’s surface, making you more susceptible to it. In other words, it is this bacteria that is at the root of the problem.
This is important because antibiotics prescribed for the two bacteria are different. So, if you find yourself back at the gynaecologist’s clinic all too often, you might want to get your Gardnerella Vaginalis checked out!
