Heeng Ka Paani, Hibiscus Tea & 5 Other Super Effective Home Remedies For Menstrual Cramps

While extreme pain may need medical intervention, menstrual cramps can be relieved through some effective home remedies. Let us take a look at some home remedies by Mumbai-based gynaecologist Dr Aarati Patil, M.D (Ayurveda), that are sure shot ways to start dealing with the pain and cramping.

1. Sesame oil massage

A massage with sesame oil is part of an Ayurvedic routine called Abhyanga. Sesame oil has linoleic acid which makes it anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. If you experience menstrual cramps, you can take a little bit of sesame oil and massage it on your lower abdomen.

2. Tea with black pepper and ginger

Herbal tea made with dried ginger and black pepper can lower the level of prostaglandins, thereby reducing cramps. It also helps in regularising periods over time and removes the fatigue that is part of premenstrual syndrome.

3. Add cinnamon to your food

Cinnamon’s antispasmodic, anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties are all beneficial in providing relief against menstrual cramps. Try to infuse a little bit of this spice in your recipes or have cinnamon tea with honey. You could start drinking the tea two days prior to the onset of your periods for better results.

4. Fenugreek (heeng) water

Soak a handful of fenugreek (heeng) seeds in water overnight and drink it in the morning. This can help in reducing period pain.

5. Hibiscus tea

Menstrual cramps occur due to the release of prostaglandins. Try a tea with hibiscus to relieve them. Hibiscus has analgesic properties which relax the muscles of the uterus and bladder.

It is extremely important to stay hydrated during periods. Consume food that is high on water content such as cucumber, watermelon, tomatoes, etc. All of these are natural diuretics and help in reducing bloating and, therefore, the cramps as well. Try to sip warm water throughout the day. You can add some ajwain seeds to it if needed.

7. Apply warmth

This is a home remedy that has worked its magic since ages. Applying a hot water bag or giving your abdomen a warm bath can help with menstrual cramps. This is because heat relaxes the contracting muscles of your uterus to reduce the pain.
