The real deal
Sleeping with your underwear on is a bad practice as it traps bacteria in that part of your body. The trouble doubles up when the fabric of your underwear isn’t sweat-friendly. Your nether regions need to breathe and that’s why most experts advise sleeping in loose cotton pyjamas, shorts or night gowns. Dr Sonal Kumta, Gynaecologist, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, says, “We always advise patients to wear cotton underwear rather than lace or nylon as it has sweat-absorbing properties and it is way more comfortable. It also doesn’t lead to any itching”.
Keeps bacteria at bay
When you sleep with your panties on, there are chances that the bacteria might get collected in your pubic region, giving rise to infections. This is more likely if the region becomes sweaty. This is a problem of concern not only for women but men too, who are advised to sleep in loose pants. “Your lady bits need to feel free and going underwear-free at night is the best way to allow it some relief and protect it from bacteria,” explains Dr Kumta.
The comfort factor
Wearing your underwear for long hours in varied climatic conditions can also create irritation, inflammation and severe chafing of the region, making you feel uncomfortable. Removing your underwear at night is a way of allowing your vagina to breathe while you sleep comfortably. Another benefit of skipping the underwear is that it helps normalise your body temperature. “Allowing some air to get into your lady parts help it to be clean and healthy,” emphasises Dr Kumta.
