It’s a bit ridiculous, but it seems that a woman walking around without her make-up on comes as a shock for some people. From varying degrees of shock to utter disbelief, certain humans find it impossible to believe that women can exist in non-glam, make-up-free avatars too. Oh, the horror. In fact, if popular media is to be believed, women wake up with winged eyeliner and perfect, red pouty lips. Indian TV reveals that women also wake up with a crease-free sari, perfect hair (sindoor, check) and a full-on, base-heavy, eye shadow-by-the-shovel face on . No wonder the #IWokeUpLikeThis selfie trend is such a hit; you woke up with messy hair and no make-up… OMG, what is this sorcery?
Thankfully, the notion is fast being questioned because, as we mentioned before, these notions of “perfect” are ridiculous. That’s the reason why artist Sally Nixon‘s recent illustrations showing women in their real, honest and uncensored versions is getting a big thumbs-up from all of us. Simply, because it’s so real and relatable! Every woman, in her own skin.
You might not find these on Instagram, or on Facebook with over 200 likes, but these everyday images of a girl going about her life – uncensored – are so going to win the internet. We don’t need to fit into your norms of pretty. We have curves, the messy hair, unshaved legs, mood swings… and we are REAL. Can you handle us?
