Talking about abusive relationships, Indian right-wing trolls hit a new low recently when they hailed Chris brown for doing the right thing by assaulting Rihanna in 2009. In Bollywood, Salman Khan And Aishwarya Rai’s relationship was also marred by alleged abuse. We wanted to examine these celeb relationships which fell apart in the public eye and then we asked an expert to assess the pattern.

Trishala says her ex treated her like trash

Opening up about her past abusive relationship on Instagram, Trishala shared, “Long story short he treated me like trash. Obviously. And everyday I thought ‘he’s just having a bad day’ – ‘Well, he’s going through a lot so it’s okay’ ‘maybe tomorrow will be better’. And it never got better. It got worse.”

During the ‘Ask Me Anything’ on Instagram, Trishala also wrote on her Instagram stories, “Talk about having low self esteem, talk about having no respect for myself. Talk about having zero boundaries. Talk about subconsciously hating myself.”

Chris Brown & Rihanna’s breakup

A night before the Grammy Awards in 2009, Chris Brown, who was 19 year old then, was arrested for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna, who was 20 years old at that time. Chris Brown later pleaded guilty of assault that had left Rihanna bruised and bleeding.

A reminder here that Twitter troll army praised Chris for abusing Rihanna after she extended her support to the ongoing farmers’ protest. It’s a shame that it’s 2021, and we’re still justifying domestic violence and abuse.

Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai’s relationship

Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s fairy-tale romance took an ugly turn after Salman’s public display of anger on various occasions. The relationship fizzled out and the two parted ways. In an interview with TOI, Aishwarya shared that “I was at the receiving end of his abuse, infidelity and indignity.”

In another interview, Salman later said that Aishwarya wasn’t responding and returning his love and that he was forced to turn violent. “If you won’t fight, that means there is no love between you, I will not fight with an outsider; when we fight, it is all because of our love.”

We would like to believe we’ve come a long way but think of the blockbuster Kabir Singh and its glorification of abusive relationships. “It’s okay to slap your women out of love,” said the director while defending the very problematic film..

But the break up took an ugly turn in 2014, when Preity Zinta filed a complaint against Ness Wadia for allegedly abusing and molesting her at the Wankhede Stadium. Preity alleged, “Mr Ness Wadia had intimidated me by saying that he could make me disappear as I was a nobody and only an actress and he’s a powerful person… I have tried to be very normal and nice to him as I wanted peace in my life, but the recent afore-stated incident in Mumbai at the Wankhede stadium has left me shattered and fearful for my life.”

Kudos to these brave women for standing up for themselves and deciding to share their stories as it can eventually help those who may find themselves in similar situations.

What experts think about toxic relationships

Dr Rahul Ratan Bagale, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, Apollo Clinic, Pune, shares that recognising and accepting that you’re in a toxic relationship is the first step towards healing. He says, “If a negative emotional state persists and anger, despair, hatred, jealousy have taken over, then the relationship is getting toxic.”

He added that victims of abuse in such relationships tend to stay and rationalise the toxic behaviour. “ Victims often tend to lose their self-esteem and they insist on making that relationship work whereas the other partner benefits in such a situation. A relationship should never come at the cost of your mental-health. It is important to learn from your relationships and prioritise self. Remember those learnings when seeking a relationship in the future.”
