Aamir Khan celebrated his 56th birthday on 14th March, and it seems that with age, truly comes wisdom because a day after he quit social media, leaving behind a sweet goodbye message for his fans.

The popular actor posted a statement claiming that this was his last social media post and all further posts will be put up on the official account of Aamir Khan Productions. With a little bit of sarcasm, and a whole lot of truth, Aamir Khan’s post feels like a genuine goodbye, and one that might be a good thing for the actor.

The post reads, “Hey guys, thank you so much for all the love and warmth on my birthday. My heart is full. In other news, this is going to be my last post on social media. Considering that I am SO active anyway I have decided to drop the pretence. We will continue to communicate as we did before. In addition, AKP has created its official channel! So future updates on me and my films can be found there. Here’s the official handle! @akppl_official. Lots of love, always, a. ”

This is not the only time Aamir Khan decided to take a step back from the constant barrage of noise that is social media. This February, the veteran actor said that he would be turning off his phone until the release of his upcoming film, Laal Singh Chaddha. The constant buzzing of the mobile had turned into a nuisance and distraction.

This is a story we all are very familiar with. When our phones keep pinging, it is like a siren call that we cannot ignore. Social media has a vice grip on all generations in the current day and age, and sadly, it is not always the most encouraging and positive space.

Being in the movie business means letting go of a certain amount of your personal space. With the advent of social media, it has become easier for fans, as well as haters, to congregate online and leave comments from behind a mask of anonymity. Bollywood celebs have to deal with trolls, negative commenters, and a lot of scary DMs that impinge not only on their personal space, but also their safety and security.

This can do a number on their mental health, and this is why Aamir Khan’s decision to get off of social media makes a lot of sense. A social media detox can be the perfect way to let go of the issues that might be causing mental health problems like anxiety and stress.

He is not the only celebrity who has decided to log out. Last year, after the media circus kept poking at the case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, a lot of Bollywood celebrities like Sonakshi Sinha, Sooraj Pancholi, and others, decided to take a step back from Instagram and Twitter. Just because someone works in the public domain, it does not give the public the option of treating them and their mental health as unimportant!

Aamir Khan’s decision has already garnered a ton of love (and hate) online. The twitterverse is blowing up with tweets from people who want to follow in the footsteps of the bollywood celeb and delete their social media as well!

If you have been feeling the wrath of the dark side of the internet, and are stressed out because of negative comments online, perhaps this is the perfect time to take a break from social media and work on feeling better, emotionally and mentally.

There are small ways you can reduce your FOMO, and the time is ripe to take steps to make sure you’re putting your real self in front of your virtual one. Assess where you are in life and perhaps you will realise that it is time for the detox that can save you from yourself (and those pesky trolls)!
