Sleep is one of the most important things for looking great, being healthy, and feeling sane. The unfortunate part is, it is as elusive as it is important. If you have trouble falling asleep, and wake up every day feeling tired or half-rested, read on to find out how to make this essential nighttime (or afternoon, if you’re lucky enough to have time to snooze) activity your best friend.

Switch off all screens

Make it a habit to turn off your television, computer, tablet or phone, at least an hour before bedtime. The bright light from these devices can make it harder for your eyes to relax, and will prevent you from sleeping. If you like falling asleep scrolling through Instagram, and absolutely cannot switch off entirely, we recommend at least reducing the brightness of your screen to a minimum.

Keep chamomile tea handy

“Calming” chamomile is famous for being a mild sedative, so much so, that it was used by ancient kings before bedtime to help them fall asleep. Just brew a warm cup before bed and let the concoction work its charm.

Try a bolster or leg pillow

A great way to make bedtime more cosy, adding pillows can help you sleep more comfortably. On the downside, though, be warned that they feel so snug, that they can make waking up quite a task!

Aromatherapy has a whole bunch of uses, so try a mix of calming and relaxing aromatic agents to help yourself sleep. For instance, vanilla has relaxing and sedative properties that can drive away stress or restlessness, helping you doze off. Similarly, lavender-scented sprays or candles can help you eliminate tension and relax.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that bright lights and a noisy television is detrimental to a good night’s sleep. However, many of us still fall asleep in front of our T.V’s, only to be rudely awakened by a loud advertisement at 3 AM. The point? Turn off the lights, switch off your phone’s notifications, and let your system unwind, uninterrupted.
