Buying organic food is great but it’s also a little more expensive than the regular fare. Also, nothing everything needs to be organic because frankly, pesticides don’t affect everything! Some food and veggies have adequately thick outer layers so pesticides can’t get through their membranes. Remember, that’s the point of organic food? It’s not just a trend! These are the items you don’t need to go the organic route with because they’re perfectly safe otherwise and, let’s be real: you’re not trying to be a hipster.

Onions

1. Onions:

Onions are an ingredient that’s least affected by pesticides. They are usually treated with very little or no pesticides and are often grown to deter pests in the garden.

Corn

2. Corn:

Corn is protected by layers of leaves which keep pesticides out. Always try and buy corn fresh and local and roast or boil it to enjoy it.

Pineapple

3. Pineapple:

The tough outer layer of the pineapple protects the fruit inside from all kinds of germs and pesticides so you don’t ingest them.

Mango

4. Mango:

Mango flesh is protected with a thick skin which keeps pesticides at bay. But to be sure you can rinse your mangoes well with running water before they are ready to eat and you are good to go.

Peas

5. Sweet peas:

Their pods keep peas safe and makes them the least likely veggie to be affected by pests. Look for full, green pods.

Kiwi

6. Kiwis:

Kiwis have a thick protective outer skin that is tough and fuzzy and keeps the fruit pesticide-free.

Eggplant

7. Eggplant:

Eggplants too have a thick outer layer that is also slick so pesticides slide right off. But if you are going to eat the outer skin too (for recipes like filled baigans or baigan bhartas) then you must opt for the organic version.

Sweet Potato

8. Sweet Potatoes:

Sweet potatoes are roots that grow underground and thus arevery unlikely to be contaminated by pests or infected with pesticides. They are a super food with a lot of benefits so include them in your diet.
