Planning and setting fitness goals is always fun but the not-so-fun bit is when you have to work towards accomplishing them. Speaking from personal experience, here’s why goal setting is tough and you’d rather use your routine to pursue fitness.
1. Make it a good habit
Exercise should be part of your daily routine.Don’t make the mistake of alloting it as a separate activity which can be done only during some spare time. That’s a big mistake. Make it a habit, a good one, of course. If it becomes part of your routine then it has the power to build something strong within you and you can set out to achieve any goal that may seem unattainable.
2. Plan your day
Nothing works as best as planning and pursuing. Before you hit the sack at night, plan your next day. Write down if you want to go for a run or hit the gym or just do yoga at home. Planning helps the brain to stay focussed on the activity.
3. Be prepared for upsets in the planning
There’s every possibility that you may have to change your workout plan because of some unforeseen circumstances – sickness, an urgent office meeting or rains. Keep a back-up plan. For instance, if you have an urgent meeting and you have to reach office early then take the stairs up to your floor. We can pursue if we persist.
4. What works for you, ONLY works for you
It’s very natural for us, humans, to compare our life with that of others. But it’s important to know and accept that we are unique in every aspect – even the way we are built. So intelligence lies in stopping the comparison and making realistic fitness plans that work ONLY for us. Don’t get carried away by what others set out to do, it may not necessarily work for you. And in the bargain, you’ll probably end up feeling miserable.
5. Procrastination is your only enemy
Yes, this P-word can be quite a roadblock in our fitness pursuit. The mind will interfere and give you multiple reasons to postpone the workout to another day. But remember that today is that another day. Procrastination will only leave you with regret and sadness. Being proactive and going out there to achieve your goal is what will make you fit and happy.
