Beginning your day with yoga can add instant positivity to your life, but if you are looking to make the most of your practice, you’ll have to follow the rules. And quite frankly, nobody really spells out the rules. So to make it easier for you, we’ve made a list of all the unspoken yet pretty serious rules every yogi must follow to achieve that perfect state of zen.

1. Don’t step on other people’s mats. The yoga mat is a sacred place where you will practise intense asanas. So as a mark of respect for yoga and the space, you must not step on someone else’s mat.

2. No socks allowed. Practising yoga doesn’t require you to wear socks. In fact you’ll be able to concentrate better if you are barefoot. Plus you’ll keep away any lousy smells too.

3. Don’t fart on your teacher. Yoga can activate various points in your body that can make you lose control of some of your bodily functions. But if you have to fart, you must control till your teacher’s moved away.

4. Don’t chat. Yoga is best practised in silence; so chatting with your neighbour in yoga class is a strict no even if it is in hushed voices.

5. Ask questions quietly. If you’ve got any queries, you certainly should get them addressed, but make sure you do so without disturbing others.

6. Don’t just take a nap. Isn’t it too expensive to simply sleep in yoga class? Wake yourself up and practise a few asanas too before you choose to dose off during shavasana.

7. No white pants. Going into dog pose wearing white pants would be odd, especially if everything’s going to be visible. So make sure you do a check before you set out for class.

8. Don’t make noise after the class. Once you are done with your class, make sure you pack up in silence and let the others enjoy their experience in serenity.

9. Don’t move your mat. While doing the asanas, if your mat moves too much to can disturb the others. It could also increase your chances of a fall and lead to injuries too. That’s why maintaining balance is essential.

10. Be on time. Yoga is a practice that works on discipline, so make sure you start by being on time.

11. Keep electronics off. A ringing phone during a meditation session is the most annoying thing ever. Either keep your electronics away or switch them off.

12. Go easy on the perfume. A strong scent can be disturbing for other yogis. Spray just enough to keep you fresh, not the entire room.

13. Always carry a towel. Yoga is a strenuous activity and by the end of the session you are likely to sweat a lot. Carry your own towel to dry yourself before you head home.
