Diabetes is affecting urban Indians like slow poison. In fact, our fast-paced, sedentary lifestyles have made it more conducive for diabetes to be on the rise. Diabetes occurs when the blood sugar (glucose) levels in the body become abnormally high. Even though this disease is affecting both men and women equally, the symptoms in women are a little different that those seen in men. If you are an urban working woman, watch out for these signs of Type 1 diabetes.
1. Yeast infections: In women, an elevated glucose level can lead to formation of yeast in various parts of the body. Vaginal and oral yeast infections, and vaginal thrush is also commonly noted.
2. Urinary infections: Some women also complain of urinary tract infections that can occur due to irregularity in your body’s glucose levels.
3. Sexual dysfunction: Do not feel like getting frisky lately? It could be a sign of sexual dysfunction occurring due to the onset of diabetes.
4. PCOS: Polycistic ovarian syndrome is a common hormonal problem that 70 per cent of women face these days. It is a lifestyle disorder and could also be an indication of a more severe disease like diabetes.
5. Increased thirst and hunger: Think you’ve been eating too much lately? Could be because of some underlying cause like diabetes which dissolves all your food faster. If this continues it might be good to get checked.
6. Frequency in urination: This is a classic sign of diabetes and is pretty much common to both men and women. If you think you’ve been visiting the ladies room more often these days coupled with other unusual symptoms, you must get checked immediately.
7. Weight gain: Diabetes causes weight gain or even weight loss in some cases. If there is no apparent reason for this weight variation, it could be a major symptom of diabetes.
8. Fatigue: Diabetes could make you weak and that could lead you to feel fatigued. You could also experience blurry vision and nausea along with skin infections.
9. Wounds heal slowly: Another common symptom of diabetes is that your wounds will not heal easily and will take longer than usual. If this happens, it is your cue.
10. Skin disease: Skin infections, developing darker patches on the body creases and awkward, tingling feeling in the hands and feet are all signs of diabetes.
