We’re comfortable talking about our hips, arms, waists and whatnot, but our boobies? Well, they are a taboo subject for most of us. And the whole idea of not talking about them openly only leads to myths and misconceptions. As if those weren’t enough, bra myths only add to the confusion. So before yo go spreading another one of those silly ideas, we decided to clear the air by busting the 10 most popular over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder myths that are doing the rounds.
1. Sleeping with a bra makes your breasts perky: Many women think that wearing a bra while you catch some shut-eye helps keep your breasts perky. But this is a huge myth. Not only is it totally uncomfortable keeping your girls tied up 24×7, it doesn’t make them perky either.
2. Underwire bras up breast cancer risk: There is no evidence to support this. This myth sprung up in the 90s when some researchers claimed that these bras trapped toxins in the breast tissue and increased the risk of cancer. This was never justified though.
3. A light coloured bra is less visible: Most women think wearing a white bra under a white shirt makes your bra invisible. This isn’t true. If you want to go incognito, wear a bra that matches the colour of your skin best only then will it be less discoverable. So nude bras are your best bet.
4. No bra = saggy breasts: Most women believe that not wearing a bra results in sagging breasts. But this is a myth, because not wearing a bra only brings your breasts to their original shape and does not initiate sagging although it might seem like that.
5. Sleeping on your side results in uneven breasts: All of us have one breast naturally bigger than the other. Sleeping on one side doesn’t do anything to your breast size and there is no truth in this idea.
6. For bigger boobs wear training bras: Training bras or sports bras for that matter are designed for comfort and have nothing to do with your breast size. They don’t initiate breast enlargement in any way. So if that’s why you are sporting one, don’t bother.
7. Bras have fixed sizes: Nope, not if you are trying a different brand, fit or style. Just like other clothing items, bra sizes too can differ and you might need a size smaller or larger depending on the style or brand you choose. So a 36 B could also go to a 34 C on certain occasions.
8. Wearing a bra to bed causes breast cancer: Underwire or padded, there is no substantial evidence to prove that wearing a bra to bed causes breast cancer. You may wear one if you are comfortable, but be assured that it won’t lead to cancer. Unless you feel lumps in your breasts and notice changes, you need not worry.
9. It’s okay to machine wash your bras: Yes, it is but only if you are washing them gently because otherwise you may end up harming the fabric and damaging the hooks with a regular machine wash routine. The best thing would be to hand wash and air-dry them for longevity.
10. The bra band size isn’t as important: To be true, your bra band does all the work of holding your girls in place. So make sure it is the right size and doesn’t ride up your back. The perfect band size would be one you are comfortable wearing on the first hook.
