Kolkata is all about good food, good food, and good food! The city has bagged the title of India’s Best Street Food Hub for a reason. If you’re from Kolkata, you already know what that means. If you aren’t and haven’t been to this city of joy (read: soul food) then you have no clue what you are missing out on. 

So, whenever you make it to the city next, DO NOT forget to gorge on some absolutely heavenly food at these joints. Actually, heavenly is an understatement. Take notes, already!

1. Chelo kebabs at Peter Cat, Park Street

If you’re a kebab fan, you can’t miss out on the Iranian chelo kebabs you get at Peter Cat. Served with the distinctive flavoured ghee rice and veggies, it smells divine and it’s literally heaven on your plate.

2. Mutton stew at Chittoda’s shop, Deckers Lane

Chittoda’s mutton stew is an experience. Set in Deckers Lane, this joint is an absolute favourite for office goers. The mutton stew is not only the tastiest in the city but also healthy as well.

3. Aloo dom r luchchi from Maharani, Lake Market

Luchchi aloor dom is a staple breakfast in every household, but still the one you get at Maharani is a class apart. Oh, and the jilipi (jalebi) you get is just out of the world. 

4. Rice noodles and prawn chips at Beijing Restaurant, Tangra 

Did you know Kolkata has its own mini China nestled in Tangra? The legendary Chinese restaurant called Beijing serves the best rice noodles, momos, and prawn chips in the city. 

5. Baked roshogolla at Balaram Mullick Sweets, Park Street

Every lane, every corner in Kolkata has a sweet shop, so many that we have no count. We don’t even want to keep count, the more the merrier. Still, the one thing you have got to try before leaving Kolkata is baked roshogolla from one of the oldest sweet stores–Balaram Mullick. It’s foodgasm at its best.

6. Kathi roll at Nizam

If you’re in Park Street, you can’t miss out on the kathi rolls. Although there are several shops selling them, look out for the tiny Nizam window. One proper kathi roll and you don’t have to worry about lunch.

7. Chicken kobiraji at Mitra cafe

Mitra Cafe isn’t in vogue anymore but its chicken kobiraji still is. Kobiraji is an item very special to Kolkata–a huge chunk of meat covered in egg, well nothing gets better than that.
