We visited The Sassy Spoon on a busy Friday night. The décor was equal parts cute and Christmassy.
The staff was friendly and adept at offering us recommendations. To drink, they recommended the Sangria and Very Berry Khatta. The Very Berry Khatta was a lovely combination of mulberries, oranges and kala khatta flavouring that instantly brought back memories of lazy evenings spent at Juhu Beach. The sangria was great too.
For starters, we tried the Twice Baked Emmenthal Soufflé, the Crispy Chicken, their Cajun Spiced Butter Garlic Prawns and the couscous. The highlights were definitely the chicken and the prawns. The chicken was cooked perfectly, appropriately tangy and was accompanied by a tasty dip. The prawns were my personal favourite with just the right amount of Cajun spicing. I enjoyed it so much that I completely ignored the French baguette that accompanied the dish. The soufflé gets a special mention for tasting light and fluffy although we found it a bit too ‘eggy’ for our tastes.
Our main course took a while to arrive. The gap between the two courses made us more aware of the constant noise that punctuated our meal at the Sassy Spoon. The constant buzz made it quite difficult to sustain a conversation so give this place a miss if you are looking forward to a good chat rather than the food.
When our dinner finally arrived, it was well worth the wait! We had ordered spiced rawas and the pork ribs. The rawas, steamed in a banana leaf was cooked to perfection! The tangy tamarind flavouring of the rawas was well complemented by the coconut rice that accompanied the dish. The ribs came with portions of mashed potatoes and veggies. The pork was tender and tasty although the barbeque sauce was too sweet for my liking. All in all, the mains left us feeling happy and satisfied although we definitely left some space for dessert!
The decadent dessert at The Sassy Spoon
The dessert menu is comprehensive and will leave you happily indecisive. Being spoilt for choice, we found it difficult to choose, but finally settled on the seven textured hazelnut and chocolate cake plus a few scoops of their homemade ice creams. If you are a chocolate aficionado, you will definitely love the seven textured cake. There’s a whole load of chocolaty goodness in every bite, definitely worth the pounds you’d pack on if you gobble this down! The basil and pine nut ice cream with extra virgin olive oil seemed weird at first but it was quite delicious once we got used to the slight drizzle of oil on top of the dessert. A worthy mention here is the guava sorbet which is a great way to cleanse your palate after a tasty meal.
The Sassy Spoon offers you some great options for a scrumptious meal but prepare yourself for a noisy dinner, especially if you visit on a Friday night.
