A piping hot bowl of dal is one of our favourite comfort foods. In the depths of winter, this comfort food can get an upgrade if you make a soup with it. With just a few spices, this soup can be a healthy option if you wish to have something light for dinner.
Ingredients:
1 tbsp oil
1/2 cup sliced onions
1/2 tsp garlic, finely chopped
1/2 tsp chilli powder (optional)
3/4 cup tomatoes, chopped
4 tbsp masoor dal (split red lentil)
Salt to taste
For the garnish
1/4 cup cooked rice
Lemon wedges
Method:
- Heat the oil in a pressure cooker, add the onions and sauté on a medium flame for one to two minutes.
- Add the garlic and chilli powder and sauté on a medium flame for a few more minutes.
- Add the masoor dal and tomatoes and saute for one to two minutes.
- Add the salt, mix well and saute for one more minute.
- Add 2½ cups of water, mix well and pressure cook for two whistles.
- Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
- Blend the mixture to a smooth puree and then strain using a sieve.
- Transfer to a pan and boil for five to seven minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with rice and lemon wedges.
