How to Make Low-Cal Potato Pattie Aka Batata Vada

A delightful potato treat

Batata Vada may be Mumbai’s most famous street food but potato lovers across the country have wholeheartedly accepted this dish, making it one of the most enjoyed snacks. The soft, spiced potatoes are covered with a crisp coating that enhances its flavour and the crunchiness adds a touch of fun to this comfort food. Sadly, the oil used to fry these potato patties makes it high in calories. But fret not, here’s an easy, low-cal and oil-free Potato Pattie aka Batata Vada recipe for you to make this street favourite at home.

Serve with garlic chutney and bread to enjoy.

Ingredients:

For the vadas
2 cups boiled, peeled and mashed potatoes
2 tsp oil
a pinch mustard seeds
4 to 5 curry leaves
a pinch asafoetida
1 ½ tsp ginger-green chili paste
1 tsp garlic paste
¼ tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp chopped coriander
1 tsp lemon juice
salt to taste

For the batter
½ cup besan
¼ tsp chili powder
¼ tsp turmeric powder
a pinch asafoetida
salt to taste

3/4 tsp oil for cooking

Method:

For the vadas:

1. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds.
2. When the seeds crackle, add the curry leaves and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
3. Add the ginger-green chilli paste and garlic paste and again sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
4. Add the potatoes, turmeric powder, coriander, lemon juice and salt, mix well cook on a medium flame for one to two minutes. Keep aside to cool.

For the batter:

1. Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl, add enough water to make a batter of pouring consistency. Keep aside

How to proceed:

1. Divide the mixture into six equal portions and shape them into flat round vadas. Keep aside.

2. Dip each vada in the batter and place them in a hot broad non-stick pan.

3. Cover and cook on a slow flame for three to four minutes, using 1/8 tsp of oil.

4. Turn upside down, cover again and cook for another four minutes or till they turn golden brown in colour.

5. Serve hot with dry garlic chutney or whole wheat pav.
