Floatation therapy, a new-age science, promises to heal you not only physically but also spiritually and emotionally by relaxing the mind, body and soul. We spoke to the Vartika Gupta, Marketing Manager of the recently launched healing centre, 1000 Petals in Bangalore, about this new-age therapy and she explains, “Also called as sensory deprivation, floatation therapy basically means cutting off from all your senses. It entails losing your sense of gravity which is what our body keeps fighting 99 per cent of the time.” It sound intense, but it’s also a guaranteed stress buster.
The process basically involves lying in a pod filled with 10 inches of water, which contains concentrated Epsom salt to keep you afloat, like in the Dead Sea. The water is heated to body temperature to put the patient at ease, while the salt formula – Epsom has healing qualities – relaxes the body and releases all the tension. Essentially, when the body is submerged in water it creates a disconnect with the brain. When you are cut off from the constant bombardment of sensory input, you move to the state which you experience right before you fall asleep.
“Most people that have come are usually familiar with meditation techniques. People are a little anxious but all the tanks are hydraulic and can be left half open if the patients feel suffocated. Moreover the tanks also have soft lighting and music facilities to ease the patients,” adds Vartika. 1000 Petals is one of the first floating therapy centres in India, which offers this facility at Rs 4,000.
