The Truth About Moisturising Eye Drops

The stress we give our eyes by staring at a computer or phone screen all day results in dryness or redness. Eyes definitely require some TLC these days. That’s where moisturising eye drops come into the picture. Most doctors prescribe these eye drops for regular use but are they really needed? Here’s the truth about moisturising eye drops and whether or not you should continue using them.

What do they do?

Eye drops are basically lubricants that help the eyes retain their moisture and keep them hydrated. This prevents them from irritation and keeps burning sensations away. Our eyes become dry due to the tear glands not producing enough tears to keep the eyes moisturised. When there is no moisture, the cornea becomes irritated and affects your vision. Blinking is one way of lubricating your eyes and keeping them healthy.

Dr. Mridula Mehta, Opthomologist, Primus Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai says, “Eye drops are substitutes for dry eyes which are very common because of pollution, allergy, long hours on the computer and air conditioning. So they help keep the surface of the eyes wet which is essential for its functioning.”

When should you use them?

The main cause of dry eyes and redness is constant staring at the computer and other environmental hazards such as dust and heat. Dr. Navin Sakuja, Ophthalmologist, New Delhi, says, “Moisturising eye drops are extremely beneficial in our country given the high level of pollution, dust and heat our eyes are exposed to. One must, however, maintain caution and use brands which contain limited preservatives in them.”

Thus it is appropriate to use them when you face any kind of dryness or irritation in the eyes. “If you are suffering from dry eyes then you can use them as frequently as four times a day or according to your doctor’s prescription,” adds Dr. Mehta.

Are they entirely safe?

“Indians are more prone to chronic loss of tear secretory cells because of the prevailing environmental conditions causing them to develop chronic dry eyes as they grow older. There are certain cells called goblet cells which get damaged over time due to excessive pollution and dust. It is thus important to keep one’s eyes well-hydrated and moisturised,” explains Dr. Sakuja.

There are no severe reactions with moisturising eye drops but if you do notice any abnormalities you must contact your doctor immediately. Dr. Mehta also adds that, “Most of these are safe but some come with preservatives which in the long run damages the surface of eyes.” There can sometimes be allergic reactions that you should pay attention to. Some medications like decongestants, blood pressure medicines and antihistamines also come with side-effects such as dry eyes, so be vigilant. “Side effects like eye pain, redness, itching, swelling, a stinging sensation, widened pupils or blurred vision which occur after using eye drops must be reported to your doctor so that immediate action and preventive measures can be taken,” concludes Dr. Mehta
