Oxford Dictionaries are considered as a benchmark for English language and when they announce their word of the year, it sure needs to be taken note of. So this year they’ve announced their word of the year and you won’t believe what it is. The emoji, ‘Face with Tears of Joy’, that is often used to describe happiness, is the word of the year for 2015.

Emojis are basically small digital images or icons that are used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication. Off late emojis have received a lot of attention especially when the diverse skin tone emojis were introduced and long-requested emojis like the mosque, Indian flag, cricket bat and the taco were added.

The word of the year is basically that one word which best describes the year gone by. It could also be an expression but the Oxford review team chose this emoji as it manages to capture the ethos, mood and preoccupation of the year 2015. Therefore, instead of the traditional word, a pictograph was chosen.

Emojis have also become a popular way to communicate, giving rise to a new culture that’s taking over mainstream texting in a digital world, which is emotionally expressive and obsessively immediate plus its easy, flexible and fun too.

Research backed by real-time language analysis also concluded that the Face with Tears of Joy is the most-used emoji and the smiley with a kiss comes a close second.
