A birthday party turned into a nightmare for a 15-year-old girl from Thane, when she was gang-raped by two men after being given spiked drinks.

According to the victim, who lodged a police complaint on Monday night, almost a week after the incident took place on September 30, she was sexually abused between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. that day.

As per the complaint, the girl, a resident of Thane’s Ghodubunder Road locality was called for a birthday celebration and picked up by one her friends, Kaustub Chavan (21), on a bike. She was taken to a chawl, where she was given spiked drinks and then raped by the friend and another person.

Horrific as the incident was, what is disturbing about it all is the fact that a woman too was involved in it. It was Deepika Ahire, Chavan’s 25-year-old cousin, who greeted the girl when she entered the house and gave her the spiked drinks.

It was Deepika, who guarded the room watching the two men sexually assault the 15-year-old girl for four hours. Women often turn out to be other women’s worst enemies. We only have to take a look at cases of dowry harassment and female infanticides to realise the extent of involvement and provocation that many women offer to other females in such situations.

And as long as this horrific state of affairs continues to last, men will continue to take advantage of it and inflict violence upon women.
