It’s never easy to treat scars, especially the ones left by domestic abuse. While the visible ones fade, the one that remain are the emotional ones, which are hard to heal. Tattooist Flavia Carvalho has been healing domestic abuse victims in a unique way in which both the visible and invisible ones can be removed. Her project called ‘A Pele da Flor’ (The Skin of the Flower) is all about inking over the scars of the victims, free of charge. The tattoos cover the reminders of knife, bullet and other injuries, which the victims bear.
It all started when Flavia Carvalho met a woman who wanted a tattoo to cover a big scar on her abdomen. The woman had been stabbed by a man, who was turned down at a bar. It gave Flavia the idea to help numerous victims out there.
According to the 31-year-old tattoo artist, these tattoos act as an instrument for empowerment and self-esteem booster.
