We’ve heard the “She was asking for it” comment more often than we care to count, directed at women who’ve been assaulted, raped of victimised. But think about it, would anyone ever ask to be molested or sexually violated? And wouldn’t it be called mutual consent (and not rape) if she did ask for it?
We ought to think about these things, especially in our deeply misogynist society where blaming the woman is the norm.
Here’s a video by Cut Video from their One Word series asking 33 women their one-word reponse to the phrase “she was asking for it.” Their responses are so powerful that they’ll make you realise how victim-blaming is a senseless deed and needs some serious re-thinking.
These women also talk about how angry and disgusted this statement makes them because no woman would ever ask to be molested or raped. Another lady puts it beautifully saying, women should have the right to wear whatever they want even a low cut blouse if that makes them feel comfortable, this is their right and nobody can question it! We certainly agree.
Everybody needs to watch this video to know how ‘she was asking for it’ really makes us feel.
