Sushma Verma, a 15-year-old girl from Lucknow, has become the youngest postgraduate student in India. She’s now pursuing research in Environmental Microbiology from Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow.
Sushma’s story is unique as she’s rose up from a really tough social background and achieved what many in her circumstances can’t. Sushma, daughter of a sanitation worker, completed her MSc in Microbiology from BBAU and also topped her class.
Her professors believe that Sushma is a truly gifted child with great capabilities. Prof R C Sobti Vice Chancellor at BBAU has also promised Sushma a hostel seat and scholarship.
In the past too, Sushma appeared for her ninth grade exam, when she was still a toddler. She was also the youngest student to have cleared the tenth board exams, as recognised by the Limca Book of Records.
She became a graduate at a young age of 13. She got interested in Microbiology, when she had to do lab work on isolating Rhizobium bacteria in rots of leguminous plants, at post-graduate level.
Sushma’s father Tej Bahadur is an assistant supervisor (sanitation) at BBAU while her mother is a housewife. Her brother Shailendra too is exceptionally intelligent and completed his BCA at the age of 14 and is now pursuing his MCA in Bangaluru.
