Landing a job with a multinational corporation is the biggest deal ever, or so we think. But that’s not always the case. Many start-ups have done a great job in making a mark in a competition-driven market. Start-ups are great for people who look for an opportunity to start their career or who have experience enough to make a difference to an organisation. In fact, some start-up companies offer a better salary package than big corporations. However, starting a career at a start-up is also a risky affair as the company could shut down eventually. To put an end to your dilemma, here are ten questions you should ask yourself before you sign on the dotted line.

1. What is the work experience of the CEO of the company? Always do background research of the CEO or the man behind the start-up. If he is a newbie in the market, it is possible that the company might not survive for long.

2. Does the company have good funding and how much will they pay you? Start-ups require a healthy chunk of money. Make sure you know how the company is being funded and that they are offering you a good package. You don’t want to rely on increments that might never come or worse still, deal with salary delays.

3. Do you believe in the company’s vision? Every company has a visionary goals that they wish to achieve in a given period. Join only if you too believe in the same.

4. Are you ready to learn? You may have experience working in a similar firm, but with a start-up you may have to devote extra time to learning several new things.

5. Is the profit margin high of this start-up? It’s important that your company grows the maximum in the first year or two. Otherwise don’t expect any appraisal from this one.

6. Is there any clause that the company is not liable to give prior notice before shutting down or sacking any employee? Many start-ups hide the clause that states they may sack their employees without any intimation. It is better to be clear about their sacking policy.

7. What are their immediate goals? It’s important to know what their plans for the next three months are and how you can play a vital role in the same.

8. What is the work culture? Each start-up is unique. As you will be closely working with the teammates, it is important to know about the work environment and culture of the organisation.

9. What was the most recent valuation of the company? A company will never accept that they are sinking. You should ask about the recent valuation of the company to know how long they can survive in the market or how far they will go.

10. Do you have a promising career in this organisation? It is important to know not just how you can contribute to the company but also what role the company will play in helping you build your career. Evaluate pros and cons of being a part of this start-up before you make your decision.
