We have had numerous breast cancer awareness campaigns and programmes, but that campaign is yet to be showcased in Indian films, telly soaps and animations. In Hollywood, breast cancer has made it to films and telly soaps from Kristina Braverman in ‘Parenthood’ to Samantha Jones in ‘Sex and the City’. But breast cancer, until now, has never made it to animated series.
It fell upon contemporary artist named AleXsandro Palombo to do that after one of his colleagues succumbed to the illness. Palombo who practices social activism through his art and cartoons has now created a new series called ‘Survivors’. It imagines what well-known female cartoon personalities like Wonder Woman, The Little Mermaid, Marge Simpson and Snow White among others, would look like after undergoing surgery to combat breast cancer. He chose to highlight surgery scars in order to shine a light on the strength and courage that survivors exhibit when fighting the disease.
“You must be very strong to be able to react psychologically and accept the new appearance of your own body,” he told The Huffington Post. “My message is one of hope and courage. I believe that we must also create awareness to young people and teach health education.”
