How to Make Masoor Dal Soup

A piping hot bowl of dal is one of our favourite comfort foods. In the depths of winter, this comfort food can get an upgrade if you make a soup with it. With just a few spices, this soup can be a healthy option if you wish to have something light for dinner.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp oil
1/2 cup sliced onions
1/2 tsp garlic, finely chopped
1/2 tsp chilli powder (optional)
3/4 cup tomatoes, chopped
4 tbsp masoor dal (split red lentil)
Salt to taste

For the garnish
1/4 cup cooked rice
Lemon wedges

Method:

 

  1. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker, add the onions and sauté on a medium flame for one to two minutes.
  2. Add the garlic and chilli powder and sauté on a medium flame for a few more minutes.
  3. Add the masoor dal and tomatoes and saute for one to two minutes.
  4. Add the salt, mix well and saute for one more minute.
  5. Add 2½ cups of water, mix well and pressure cook for two whistles.
  6. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  7. Blend the mixture to a smooth puree and then strain using a sieve.
  8. Transfer to a pan and boil for five to seven minutes.
  9. Serve hot, garnished with rice and lemon wedges.
