Your kids’ rooms are their little slices of paradise in this world. A space where their minds can be stimulated and their dreams can be given new wings. A place where they can express themselves completely and develop their own independent sense of aesthetics, responsibility and style. Decorating a kid’s room is both a pleasure and a challenge. A pleasure because of the awestruck look on your kid’s face when you reveal their new and improved room to them. And a challenge quite simply, because your kid’s room needs to grow and evolve with them, ergo the decor must also be classic and not have any redundant elements to it. So here’s what you need to keep in mind when decorating your kid’s room.
1) Buy beds and storage with the future in mind: Your kids aren’t going to remain itsy-bitsy people for too long and neither is all their stuff going to fit into tiny spaces forever. So when designing your kids rooms it would be wise to buy beds and storage, keeping in mind this fact.
2) Wallpaper, instead of painting: Your kids will grow up in the blink of an eye and very soon the baby pinks and sky blues that they loved as tots will not be all that appealing to them any more. Be wise, wallpaper, instead of paint. Wallpaper can easily be updated every few years without too much hassle and costs much less than painting.
3) Take your kids interests into consideration: Your kids need to have a say in the designing of their rooms. Take into account their interests and draw up a theme for them, based on which you can then shop for accessories and knick knacks to decorate their room with.
4) Multipurpose furniture: A growing child needs ample of space and the sad fact is that space comes at a premium. Therefore it is your responsibility as a parent to ensure that your child’s room is geared towards maximum utilisation of space. Think furniture with multiple uses, for instance a bed with additional storage space for blankets, books and toys. Or a study table that transforms into a computer workstation, as and when required. Think wall mounted bookshelves instead of heavy, conventional ones.
5) Fun seating options: Go beyond plastic chairs and other boring ‘adult’ furniture for your kid’s room. Think young and funky like cool coloured bean bags or poof style chairs. Not only do these give a unique identity to the room, they also bring in a vibrancy and zest into the proceedings.
6) An ideas board: How about you mount a softboard atop one of the walls and make it your kids responsibility to decorate it with pictures, sketches or any other wild ideas they may have. This is an excellent way of fostering their creativity and also ensuring that they do not write, scribble or paint on the walls themselves…
Decorating your kid’s room is actually an interesting way to bond with your kids on their interests, and to give them a sense of inclusion in the decision making and governance process in the family.
