During the press conference, a bombardment of personal questions were hurled at the contestants about relationships and connections.

Armaan Malik, in particular, faced intense scrutiny and criticism from the journalists about his polygamous marriage with Payal and Kritika. His marriage has been sparking debates inside and outside the house ever since they entered the reality show.

The criticism around Armaan Malik’s polyamorous relationshiplargely centred around how such relationship concepts are a form of disrespect for women, which caused a heated discussion between journalists, housemates and viewers.

Amidst the criticism, Ranvir Shorey took the discussion in an unexpected direction by speaking in support of Armaan Malik and his dynamic with his wives, while also making a striking observation about the many polyamorous relationships within the film industry.

Ranvir Shorey pointed out that there may be many polygamous and polyamorous relationships in the film industry on which we did not bat an eye. He stressed upon the double standards of the society’s mindset to pinpoint on just one ordinary man who has two wives, but turning a blind eye to the many celebrated names who were openly in polyamorous relationships.

Ranvir Shorey stated, “Agar aap urban, elite, liberal hote jaise bahut hain jinki do biwiya hainmain naam nahi lena chahta logon ke jo samjho film stars hain, urban elites hain, unpe itne judgemental shayad hi honge. Maine aapke sath time guzara hai. Film stars bhi hain aap jaise, but unko koi judge nahi karta.”

(“If you were urban, elite, liberal, there are many who have two wives. I don’t wanna take names but for example, we have film stars who are urban elites. We may not be this judgmental towards them. I have spent time with you guys.”)

Ranvir Shorey’s vague statement could be in reference to legendary names in Bollywood like Dharmendra and Salim Khan who have maintained polygamous relationships.

Dharmendra, an iconic Bollywood actor, married Hema Malini when he had already been married to Prakash Kaur.

On the other hand, Salim Khan, a respected screenwriter, married Helen without divorcing his first wife, Salma Khan. His dynamic was both acknowledged and respected in the industry.

Even actor Raj Babbar married Smita Patil while he was still married to his first wife, Nadira Zaheer.

There are many other similar notable names in the film industry who have not done anything differently than Armaan Malik.

Ranvir Shorey makes a point about consent in personal relationships

The discussion initiated by Shorey brings to light that unconventional relationships are a recurring theme in Bollywood. Despite film stars’ and celebrities’ unconventional romantic lives, they are respected and accepted widely.

The negative public opinion on Armaan Malik’s polygamous marriage is proof of how deep-seated biases and selective morality paves the way for society’s double standards and discrimination. At the end of the day, relationships are a confluence of consent and choices that should not be anybody’s business.

Ranvir’s comments also reminded us that a person’s personal relationships should not be judged on the basis of his or her profession. It makes us ponder about our skewed perceptions when it comes to looking at film stars and ordinary masses through the same lens.
