Romantic love can sometimes be age-blind. And just like any other relationship, this one, too, needs some work and has its own set of unique challenges. Amidst all the talk about society being progressive, a significant age gap between couples can ruffle some feathers. Then, there are couples like Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra who make it look so easy. But how?
How to bridge the age gap in relationships?
Honestly, if you’ve measured all the pros and cons and you feel there’s nothing but selfless love, respect and care between the two of you, there’s not much to worry about. Regardless, if you want your bond to stay strong as ever, here are a few tips:
1. Develop a thick skin
People will talk. Family may not approve at first. While you can turn a blind eye to outsiders’ opinion of your relationship, it might be unsettling to see your near and dear ones stand in your way. In such a situation, hear them out, address their concerns and make them understand. If you feel they’re biased and inconsiderate, then hold your ground.
2. Keep communication channels open
Once you start bottling things up, the relationship is bound to get awry. From people’s reactions to your own concerns, everything needs to be figured out together. Due to the age gap, you may be at different stages of your life with regards to career, for instance. Despite all the differences, try finding mutual interests and be open to new things.
3. Try putting yourself in your partner’s shoes
Being an understanding partner is the ground rule for every relationship. When there’s a significant age gap between two people, there may be varying levels of maturity and differences in perspective. The older one might always think that they have more life experience and hence, they’re smarter. But that isn’t always the case.
4. Discuss future plans
Before committing to each other, make sure you have talked about your expectations in life. You have to know where your partner stands as far as having children, moving cities, career and other such aspects are concerned. Try exploring their world, meet their friends and be involved.
5. Don’t blame age for everything
Despite trying your best, things might not always work in your favour. But everytime things don’t look good, it’s not the ‘age gap’ that’s responsible. Similar problems might crop up for you even in a regular relationship.
No relationship is without its challenges. But if you’re in it with the right attitude and an open mind, it’s not really any different from your other bonds.
