Alia Bhatt married Ranbir Kapoor this year and many folks are still excited about their dreamy wedding. Karan Johar is no different. On the first episode of the newest season of Koffee With Karan, the filmmaker asked Alia Bhatt about a marriage ‘myth’ and Alia’s reply had everyone in splits. The Raazi actor promptly said, “There is no such thing as suhagraat. You are tired.”
Indian women talk about their ‘first night’
While the one-liner made everyone on the sets of KWK laugh out loud, the comment actually resonated with a lot of Indian women. Here are some women who talk about their ‘first night’ after marriage and how it was nothing like the movies.
1. Ain’t nobody got time for that

“I married my best friend and we had a fancy room in a big hotel that was already paid for. Instead of wasting it, we ordered a lot of room service, watched our favourite movies, and gossiped about the guests at our wedding. It was the best night.”

“I had an arranged marriage and I was a virgin. I was super excited for the wedding, but we had a long ceremony and getting us to the ‘suhagraat’ was a hectic ordeal. My husband, who had been helping with the wedding prep for days, was exhausted. He fell asleep as soon as we were left alone. I was disappointed on the night of, but looking back, I can totally understand.”

“My then-fiance was in the army. He was going off for a long posting at the border where I could not visit him. He had been told that getting holidays was very hard, so we got married in a hurry. He left right after the wedding, so the ‘suhagraat’ was just me crying. He did get to come back soon though!”

“We were both exhausted after the long ceremonies. I could feel all my muscles cramping because of the f**king heavy lehenga that I was wearing. It was worth it, we looked great, but we had no energy for sex that night. We just cuddled, talked about how exciting the whole thing was, and fell asleep.”

5. The cousins wouldn’t leave

“I had a great wedding, short and sweet, and we had invited a lot of our friends and cousins over. After the wedding, they all kinda gathered in our room and we spent the whole night chatting with them. I remember one of the elders coming and telling them to leave us to it, but they just stayed. We drank, had a great time, and forgot all about the ‘suhagraat’ honestly. [There are] Other days to do it.”

There are a lot of women across India who have memories of an unforgettable ‘suhagraat’ plus wedding, and others who are over the whole concept. Overall, a lot of people, and not just women, absolutely agreed with Alia’s statement.
