Ranbir Kapoor is all set to come back to the big screen after a hiatus. With his two big films—Shamshera and Brahmastra—releasing soon, the 39-year-old actor has been on a promotional spree. However, he has recently landed in hot water due to his ignorant remarks on Anushka Sharma’s mental health, courtesy of an old clip which has been doing the rounds on social media.

In what appears to be an interview during the promotions of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ranbir can be seen mocking his co-star’s anxiety and going as far as to even make her medication public.

During the conversation which resurfaced on social media, he says, “Anushka is the anxiety queen… She takes anti-anxiety pills even if she has to have a conversation because she is frantic… She has a medical problem, and she has mental problem also, and a hygiene problem, but we accept her. She’s precious.”

Naturally, folks are furious with his lack of awareness

While Anushka Sharma did clap back at him and called him out, even if jokingly so, netizens aren’t too happy with the fact that her co-actor made this private information public and also belittled a mental health condition. Here are some reactions.

An established actor mocking mental health conditions does more harm than anything else

Actors and celebrities, in general, have a massive platform and whether they agree or not, more often than not, their views have a huge impact on the public. Given the lack of resources and awareness about mental health in India, Ranbir Kapoor’s remarks are only detrimental to a lot of people who are going through similar conditions.

It also goes without saying that publicly outing someone’s medical history to make a ‘joke’ is not as funny as it may seem. Though the clip is a few years old, it’s still from a time when those with privilege had access to resources and the ability to learn and unlearn.

If celebrities, with their wide reach and ability to actually make a change, cannot help, perhaps it’s best for them to not speak at all, no?
