With the ongoing pandemic, the need to make yourself your own priority, and focus on your physical and mental health is real. We got in touch with Dr Sonal Anand, Psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai to guide you on the best new year resolutions you need to make for your mental health.

Limiting screen time to an absolutely necessary period must be the number one resolution for good mental health. Detoxification should also include setting up clear lines between virtual and real expectations.

Life should revolve more around real situations rather than virtual ones. Virtual targets can lead to frustration and self doubt. They have a prolonged effect on mental health.

2. Adequate sleep

The pandemic has made us weak on routines and heavy on bingeing OTT content. This has caused major sleep deprivation and loss of morning schedules.

Chronic sleep deprivation leads to low productivity, concentration issues and behaviour problems. Lack of a disciplined schedule has its own set of problems. Morning fitness regimens, yoga and meditation have an important role to play in maintaining good mental health. Good physical health is also required for good mental health. Both go hand in hand.

3. Practicing mindfulness

Being mindful in all activities is an important resolution. Doing things mindfully helps to declutter, organize thoughts and bring out the best in oneself.

4. Keeping a to-do list

This is a common resolution and cannot be emphasized more. It helps in better organization, hitting the target on time and de-stressing as well.

5. Keeping in touch with family and friends

Even if virtually, it can give a boost to your mental health. There are many situations that only old acquaintances can understand and help out.

Make a resolution to be thankful to such people and continue being in contact with them. Count your blessings and make sure you think about at least two things that you were thankful about on a daily basis. This helps keep the positive vibe in you.

6. Start a hobby

Self-development comes from self-motivation. A hobby can help in improving areas that seem stagnant. A hobby can change your perspective and help in positive thinking by relaxing the brain and engaging in non-structured activities.

7. Food for the brain

This year, resolve to bring mindfulness to the table and be aware of what is going in your stomach. Following a healthy and balanced diet helps in maintaining good physical as well mental health. If alcohol or smoking is becoming a problem, resolve to take a step to help yourself.
