Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has received raving reviews for his recent release 83. The critics, fans and the entire film industry have heaped praises on his performance. In one of his interviews ahead of the release, the 36-year-old opened up about how he’s always been secure about the fact that his wife, Deepika Padukone, is a bigger star and more successful than him.

In an interview with Film Companion, Ranveer recalled that the time when he met Deepika, she was the reigning queen of Bollywood and earned way more than he did

He said, “I feel good when people tell me that I allowed the other actor to shine. That’s just who I am. I can’t be any other way. I have always been this secure person. I feel very happy for my wife when she achieves. There’s nobody prouder than me.”

Talking about how it’s difficult to impress his wife and that she’s his biggest critic, he said, “I’m getting a lot of love and affection from my harshest critic—my best friend, my wife who makes no bones about telling me like it is whenever they have to. This time it’s unanimous. She’s a very arty type, who also very rarely likes my mainstream stuff.”

Earlier, during an interaction with journalist Barkha Dutt at the Dainik Bhaskar Conclave, Deepika had expressed how she loved the fact that Ranveer was genuinely comfortable with her massive success during the initial stages of their relationship.

Citing that to be the prime reason for choosing Ranveer as her life partner, she said, “I married Ranveer because he respects my success and the money I make. Today, the kind of money he is making and the success he has is completely different from what he would have seven years ago. I was the more successful person and yet to genuinely be okay with the fact that I was working more; I was busier—there were days when I would not even come home because I had so much work, I was making more money but not once has it ever come in the way of our relationship. That is unique and I’d like to see more of that.”

Society needs to do away with masculinity norms

We live in a society that continues to believe that men should be financially more stable and  should earn more than women. There are men who don’t take it very sportingly if their partner or wife draws more money than they do. For most men, it’s about self-esteem and self-worth.

Even during Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif’s wedding, there were several news reports, or rather speculations, doing the rounds about Katrina bearing 75 percent of the wedding expenses. How is this even relevant? Why can’t women be the primary breadwinners in their families? Why is society so uncomfortable about women making more money than their male partners? Why should we let traditional social and masculinity norms come into play?

Couples like Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone, Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Abhishek Bachchan, and Bipasha Basu-Karan Singh Grover set exemplary instances of men being secure and okay with their wives being more successful without adding that extra layer of complexity to their relationship—money.
