“When you’re dealing with an empathy-deficient individual with a high sense of entitlement and a sadistic need to bring others down, conversations become crazy making minefields meant to psychologically terrorize and divert you.” – Shahida Arabi
A ‘narcissist’ is someone who is unhealthily in love with themselves. They have an excessive interest and admiration of themselves, and hold themselves in the highest regard. Now, you might wonder why this is a bad thing when we’re also the ones who preach self-love. Here’s the thing—dealing with people who suffer from a superiority complex can definitely be taxing, to say the least. Whether it’s at your workplace or in your personal life. Imagine trying to get through or be around someone who feels that they can never do or be wrong—it’s bound to make you livid!
Here are 5 signs that you’re in love with a narcissistic individual and it’s weighing you down.
1. They are a control freak
Okay, so this is one of the biggest symptoms of a narcissist. Since narcissists are continually disappointed with the imperfect way life unfolds, they want to do as much as possible to control it and mould it to their liking. They will always try to mend your ways, point out your faults, highlight your flaws—all under the pretext of helping you evolve into a better person, with a better life. The truth is, all they want is control. These kind of people feed off the sense of dependency they create in others.
2. They show a constant sense of entitlement
For the typical narcissist, the world owes them a whole lot. Whether it’s love, power, affection—they feel they deserve to be the centre of everyone’s attention.
3. Their need for validation can be exhausting
Narcissists need constant attention and though they may come across as super confident people, they are always seeking approval in the eyes of others. Be it with their looks or their work, if your partner’s a narcissist, they’ll need you to keep telling them how good they are at everything.
4. They constantly play blame games and deflect criticism
Though they revel in having the ability to control another human being’s life, when it comes to taking responsibility for something or owning up to anything—they will always backtrack. Instead, they will find a way to turn things around in such a way that it will make you question your own sanity. They are pros at deflecting criticism or negative attention.
5. They demonstrate a lack of empathy
Narcissists fail to see anything from another’s point of view, and are often under the misconception that they have the ability to think objectively. They are, however, extremely perceptive, and can pick up on any signs of danger, threat or any change in vibes.
