With the second wave of Coronavirus, many of us have been infected or have found ourselves in a caretaker role for a Covid-19 patient. Healthy, nutritious food is an essential part of the healing process. We asked nutritionists what one’s diet should include when battling the disease
The ideal diet for patients
“A balanced diet consisting of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, high quality fat with adequate fiber and water is needed. Sleep, rest and a positive frame of mind is ideal,” says Nutritionist and Lifestyle Educator, Karishma Chawla.
What to include
Complex carbohydrates
Karishma recommends including complex carbs such as jowar, rajgira, oats, quinoa, red rice/ brown rice poha and brown rice.
Lean protein
Lean protein like eggs, chicken, fish, dals, legumes, paneer (if tolerated) along with dairy (if tolerated) and vegan protein powders should be added to your diet. However, Karishma cautions to have a more plant based diet with moderate indulgence in meat and poultry.
Fermented food
Fermented foods such as fermented cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers with pink salt and herbs are great for the immune system.
Amla
“For centuries, amla has been used as an effective home remedy for boosting immunity against infections,” says celeb nutritionist and founder of QUA Nutrition, Ryan Fernando “It is high in vitamin C, which helps the body produce white blood cells (WBC), which aids in the fight against infections and diseases. It is also a powerful antioxidant.”
Turmeric
Turmeric contains the active ingredient curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory effects. Adds Ryan, “Curcumin reduces a number of inflammatory molecules that cause damage. It also slows the replication of the virus, as it has antiviral properties. As a result, curcumin lowers viral load.”
Guava
Guavas are high in vitamin C and are one of the most nutritious fruits. It has four times the amount of vitamin C contained in oranges. Vitamin C boosts your immune system and protects you from diseases and pathogens. Quercetin, lycopene, vitamin C, and other polyphenols are potent antioxidants that help to preserve good health by neutralizing free radicals produced in the body.
Supplements
Supplements also play a vital role in boosting immunity. Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Glutamine are some of the supplements that might help you fight against the virus. The timing and dosage of the supplement are very important and should only be consumed under the guided advice of a nutritionist or a doctor.
