Don’t bring your work home and vice versa.

Are you so madly in love that you want to spend every waking minute together? So much so, that you might even be considering getting the same job? Having a strong marriage doesn’t necessarily translate into a good working relationship. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge, here’s how you can work with your spouse and not kill each other.

Don’t bring your work home and vice versa. It gets difficult to segregate work and office, especially if your spouse is around, but make sure you know where to draw the line. “Leave all personal disagreements behind and try to create a ‘work-free’ zone,” says Harsh Rathore, who works as a business analyst along with his wife. “It is important to table emotions at work,” he adds.

Respect the work that your partner does. “If you’re working with your spouse and one of you is in a subordinate position, it is important to ensure your partner gets his/her due after a hard day’s work,” says marriage counsellor Anita Bhatia.

Understand that you’re in the same situation. “What most couples fail to realise is that working together gives you a unique connect, one that most couples strive for. You understand a unique part of each other’s life — your careers,” adds Anita. Reminding yourselves that you’re working towards the same goals and dreams can actually make the ride exciting instead of exhausting.

Your marriage should take priority. Keep each other grounded and protect your marriage against professional insecurity and competition. Blending family and work together might just be a big blessing instead of a hindrance.

Working together might stifle individual growth and identity. It, therefore, becomes imperative that you find ways to give yourself some quality time and indulge in the things that you love doing the most.
