For starters, my boss and I never shared any bad blood. We have always been pretty frank with each other, especially when it came to work stress, issues with the management or the lack of ideas and creativity. Hence, the transition from seeing her everyday to only seeing her on a screen once to twice a week has been quite interesting. Here are a few reasons why
a) There is no physical office anymore
This has been one of the weirdest transitions, perhaps for everyone. Not only has this brought out new challenges, it has made the boss-employee relationship a lot more complex. No longer can you take your superior into a private room and have a conversation about the urgent issues. Or walk up to your boss’s cubicle to say hello. These things make the workplace relationship more warm. Now, it’s ALL virtual communication which can feel quite stifling.
b) All conversation is work-related
Earlier you could have a non-work related conversation with your boss just because they happen to be around. Now, the scope of that does not exist. If there was something you wanted to discuss that was outside of work, you’d do it with someone who was outside of work. Since that proximity does not exist, those conversations have also disappeared which, to be honest, is quite sad.
c) There is more focus on work
Ever since work from home started for everyone, there is more focus on how much work is actually being done. This isn’t like the old times where you could get away with a holiday under the name of WFH. Also, more excuses were valid then. As a result of these circumstances, you’ll find that your boss is probably more accountable to their boss and so on. Hence, they’ve been on your back to complete tasks, now more than ever. It can be a lot but it is something that needs to be done.
d) It’s no-frills
The result of not having a common workplace has made our relationship, one that is strictly boss-employee. The scope of having a working friendship that helps each other mutually has been reduced to a very straightforward relationship that has no extras attached. It has made all the difference. Perhaps in some capacity, I even miss it. Now, that’s one sentence no one probably saw coming but secretly we might all be feeling it.
