How to Make Gujarati Lachko Dal [Video]

Delicious lachko dal served for dinner

Lachko dal is made with Tuvar or split pigeon gram and is a Gujarati speciality. Lachko is known as thick dal in Gujarati and is served with steamed rice. This easy recipe by chef Asha Khatau will tempt you to try it almost as soon as you enter the kitchen today!

 

Ingredients:


½ a cup of Tuvar Dal (split pigeon gram), washed and soaked in water
A pinch of asafetida
1 tbsp clarified butter (ghee)
¼- ½ tsp turmeric powder
A small piece of ginger
Salt to taste
Water

 

Method:


  1. Put the tuvar daal in a vessel which can be placed inside your pressure cooker. There should be water underneath the vessel.
  2. Add asafetida, turmeric, ghee, salt and two cups of water (approx).
  3. After three whistles, open the cooker and remove the vessel in which you have cooked the dal. Transfer the dal to another bowl.
  4. Churn the daal to make it nice and smooth.
  5. Check to see if it needs more salt.
  6. Add about half a teaspoon of ghee.
  7. Serve with hot steamed rice.
