Gone are the days when it was “a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Women have finally broken free from the prejudice and bias that held them back from living a fulfilling life. They do not need men to look after them or nurture them. The truth bomb here is that not all single women are actively looking for a partner. They are happy and content as opposed to the popular colony wali aunty’s belief that, “bechari ko koi mil nahi raha.”
A single woman is not bechari anymore
Proving this are the women role models of the modern world who do not let men define their lives: like Serena Williams, Indra Nooyi, Mary Kom, Anushka Sharma, Dutee Chand and obviously the actor, activist and an overall boss babe–Emma Watson.
In her recent interview with British Vogue, the actress spoke about her upcoming film Little Women, feminism and pressure surrounding single women turning 30. The last one being a personal fight she is currently battling since the 29-year-old hits the big O coming April.
The anxiety of reaching 30 single and unsuccessful
The actress and gender equality activist spoke about the “influx of subliminal messaging” that stresses her out and makes her anxious because of things she was supposed to have achieved by this age. “If you have not built a home, if you do not have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out… There’s just this incredible amount of anxiety,” she told the magazine of who’s cover she is set to adorn this November 7th.
Single and happy translates to “self-partnered”
But Emma is not someone to take things lying down and adds that she’s happy single, calling it “being self-partnered”. Self-partnered you ask? Well all credits to the Harry Potter actress for coining this now trending term! “I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel,” she continued. “I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.’ It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered,” said Emma.
Emma, who’s also an activist and campaigns for women’s rights, says the past year has been “tough” because of the stage of life she’s at. But guess she saved herself and thousands like her by just saying self-partnered. Now the internet is buzzing with approval and Twitter is testimony:
