Are Separate Bedrooms The Secret To Happy Marriages? The Internet Thinks So

The conventional idea of marriage is closely tied to the act of a man and woman sharing a bed. The “marital bed” remained a sacred institution, even as more and more couples left behind other symbols of marriage which seemed outdated.

But if you turn to Gwyneth Paltrow and the internet for advice, you will know that the latest must-have for a happy marriage is a separate bedroom.

Gwyneth Paltrow Has A Whole, Separate House

Gwyneth married TV mogul Brad Falchuk in 2018 in a private ceremony. The Goop founder recently revealed that the two have no plans to move in together. Instead they live separately and let their schedule dictate who will play host. Turns out, Gwyneth has an “intimacy coach” who told her that living separately is the best way to stop the relationship from becoming mundane. The Twitterverse weighed in and many agreed that this may indeed be the very bougie way to have a happy relationship. Now, I am sure, millions of couples in India, who live with their families, or in tiny apartments, can definitely not relate. But Gwyneth’s reveal got the internet talking. Are separate bedrooms the way forward?

The Pros Of Separate Bedrooms For Him And Her

Gwyneth’s guru Michaela Boehm said on a talk show: “When couples start living together, they ruin the excitement. That’s true for anyone, Hollywood star or regular commoner. Spend time apart. That could be ten minutes at the end of the workday, in separate rooms. One could take a shower while one walks the dogs. It could be having separate rooms, where you can go and spend time apart, and come back together.”

After the initial rush of being married wears off, those who are used to having their own space, may start craving it again. When you don’t get it, you may start blaming your partner. That can create resentment. Why not get a separate room and avoid potential blow-ups over space.

If the partners are also working on different schedules, with different functional hours, having a space where you can spread out and work, without disturbing your sleeping spouse, will be a boon.

When Separate Bedrooms Won’t Work

Carrie Bradshaw and Mr Big had this discussion in Sex And The City 2, as true pioneers. Are you going into your bedroom for a time-out from your partner and your marriage? That is not healthy. A separate bedroom will then become a space where you run away to escape the realities of your relationship, instead of tackling the issue plaguing your marriage.
