Do you fancy Goan delicacies but can’t find any in Mumbai? We feel you! A finely baked poi or a delicious authentic Bebinca is a rare find in Mumbai. However, the city does have Goan restaurants that serve some contemporized versions of Goan fare with a twist. But like we always say, some things are better when kept real. How we wish there were a few joints to satiate our cravings for these Goan foods.

1. Bebinca

Ye nahi khaya toh kya khaya? Let’s start with the queen of desserts, bebinca — a heavenly blend of eggs, coconut milk, cinnamon, and flour layered beautifully in the form of a cake. It is Goa’s very own traditional dessert and we just can’t have enough. Served with vanilla ice cream, this dessert is absolutely to die for. While packaged Bebinca at supermarkets is an easy find, it’s nothing compared to the fresh slice you can only find in the ultimate beach destination of India!

2. Poi

Ever had pork vindaloo with poi? It’s yummy and you simply can’t afford to miss it when you visit Goa. Not only with vindaloo, but this staple Goan bread can be served with any curry. How we wish we could find poi in Mumbai that is as good as the ones you find in Goan bakeries.

3. Xacuti

Have you ever tried the authentic fish xacuti thali in Goa? If you have, then you know what we are talking about. Uff! The delightful blend of poppy seeds, minced coconut, and red chillies made in the traditional Goan style is one helluva dish.

4. Patoleo

Not many know this, but patoleo is an exceptional Goan dessert. Although, it’s not as popular as beninca and isn’t available at every Goan restaurant. This is a home-made delicacy prepared with steamed rice paste, stuffed with jaggery and coconut and served on fresh turmeric leaves. Nom nom! If you know any Goan aunts around, head straight to her to savour this.

5. Sanna

If you haven’t had this version of the idli, toh kya khaya? There’s no doubt Mumbai has some great South Indian restaurants, but have you ever tried the Goan version of the idli? Unlike the usual idli, sanna isn’t just made of rice–it combines coconut toddy with red rice and goes best with chicken curry. You’ve gotta try it to believe it!
