Does Apple Cider Vinegar Really Aid Weight Loss? We Decode The Fad

If you’ve been on the path to weight loss, you’re probably been hitting the gym and cutting back on the carbs. You must have combed the internet for weight loss hacks and come across Apple Cider Vinegar.  ACV as it is popular known has many beauty benefits. It aids in removing product buildup from the scalp when diluted in water, adds shine to your hair and also gets rid of dandruff. But how does it aid in weight loss? The main component of Apple Cider Vinegar is acetic acid which reportedly helps increase metabolism and burn fat. It is often said to help reduce the urge to eat more when consumed before a meal due to the sense of fullness. All this is hearsay, we asked nutritionists to weigh in on ACV.

Holistic Nutritionist and Weight Management specialist Janvi Chitalia has this to say: “1-2 tbsp of ACV in 15ml water before meals in the day helps to reduce constipation as it contains pectin. It is also said to lower Blood pressure and its strong taste and odour help to reduce the occurrence of bacterial infections. Acetic acid helps in increased and efficient usage of the glucose present in the blood thereby using it as energy rather than being stored as fat. The acetic acid present in apple cider vinegar helps reduce the uptake and storage of glucose. Thus, this helps reduce the insulin resistance.”

Janvi continued that it is important to be careful about the amount of ACV and the frequency of consumption. At times it does tend to create acid reflux in some people due to its strong odour. Also like any other habit, consistency is the key. To get desired results it is important to consume ACV for at least 2-3 months.

Nutritionist Karishma Chawla adds a word of caution,  “ACV helps to keep the body in an alkaline state, Remember the body can perform optimally only when it maintains this medium.  It marginally helps in increasing the BMR of the body enhancing fat loss. Remember, To enjoy ACV’s benefits for fat loss, this must be adopted following a good nutritional plan . Just by itself it is not capable of creating miracles!”
