Deep inside we are all a little selfish, especially in relationships. There are times when we lose sight of our partner and take him/her for granted because we know they’re not going anywhere. Knowingly or unknowingly, we exhibit harsh behaviour that can hurt our partners to the core–and that’s just not okay. Here are a few instances on the extreme side of taking your partner for granted:

1. You criticize them too often

If you pull up your partner for every small instance, instead of being supportive, kind, and motivating–they’re bound to get hurt. You unknowingly convey the message that they are never good enough, no matter what they do. This involves their job, lifestyle, friends, family and everything that revolves around them. A healthy relationship requires you to treat your partner equally and with respect.

2. You threaten to leave

This is the worst type of emotional torture. It’s not kind to always threaten to leave and end the relationship. Taking advantage of someone’s weakness is never a good thing. Deep within you know you won’t leave, then why do it? Fake threats can affect your relationship majorly. So please, don’t! It often leads to anxiety and fear. Avoid making your partner go through this emotional trauma.

3. You vent often, but don’t allow your partner to do the same

Relationships cannot be one-sided. So if you feel the need to vent out with your partner, why do you get irritated when your partner opens up about their dilemma to you? Isn’t that terribly unfair?

4. You bar communication

Cutting off your partner after a fight is common, sure. But don’t use the silent treatment to teach your partner a lesson. Silent treatment puts your partner in a lot of agony. Instead, learn to let go and talk it out to come up with a solution.

5. You “impose” your opinions

You can’t be always right! So don’t force your decisions and opinions on your partner and try to get things done your way. Consider your partner’s feelings and opinions as well. There is no winner in your relationship because you’re not at war. Paying heed to their opinions and suggestions will only strengthen your bond because that’s what a partnership is all about.
