5 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Adding Your Partner's Parents To Your Social Media

Let’s just cut to the chase, and get one thing straight: NEVER add your partner’s parents to your social media. Because, if you do, you’ll have to tiptoe around your own feed as being careless with what you share can have consequences. So it’s better to keep them away from your social profiles. We know, it’s tempting to see your pictures get more likes and get into the good books of his mum and dad–but at the end of the day, is it really worth it? It’s not, and we have quite a few good reasons for it.

1. There’s always a right time for everything

It’s always a better idea to add your partner’s parents to your Facebook or Instagram after you are officially a part of the family. There’s always a right time for everything, so please don’t rush into it. Sure, you got along with them brilliantly in your first meeting–and hence, the friend/follow request on your feed is tempting. But think twice before you accept it–after all, you don’t want to regret it later.

2. Will you be comfortable with them stalking your old posts?

Of course, NOT! Nobody is. But this WILL happen. They will stalk your decade-old pictures to know how you used to look before or what you were upto then. Would you like it? We think not! You wouldn’t want them to stumble across sentimentals after-breakup posts, now would you? Ahem..Ahem!

3. If you do add them, put them on restricted mode

You know there’s a feature on Facebook where you can put a particular set of people on restricted mode, right? On Instagram you can control who sees your stories and who doesn’t. Use these features to the best of your ability. Obviously, you don’t want to lose control over your freedom of expression, but–you can control what others see. At the end of the day, it’s your profile and you have all the right to post anything you want, and you shouldn’t need a nod from anyone on that.

4. You will be under constant monitoring/scanner

God forbid, you breakup with your partner. Imagine, how awkward it’s going to be. Not that they are going to cause any harm to you on your social media timeline, but your every move after the breakup will be under scrutiny. Every gesture will be judged. For instance, you putting up a picture with a male friend will also raise eyebrows leading to the perception: “Oh! Is this why you broke up?” So why would you even want to get embroiled in a situation like that?

5. Your every move will be marked

Yes! They will be marking your every move in private mode–without you ever getting to know of course. From people you hang out with to what you wear and eat otherwise. Who knows how this information comes back to you, and from where? All of this because you added your partner’s parents. Hence, it’s always wise to not let these complications enter your life, because adding them to your social media can wait.
