I Chose To Marry A Man From The Same Profession & I Don’t Regret It One Bit

It is often advised that one shouldn’t get married to someone from the same profession. While that argument holds some merit, there are cases where it has some serious advantages. I didn’t pay heed to this advice. My partner and I belong to the same field, and trust me, it has only helped our cause. Before you throw the ‘opposites attract’ cliche at my face, hang on a minute. While it’s true to a certain extent, in a relationship, one needs to have some similarities to make it a success. After all, we aren’t magnets–there are emotions in play, and if two people are poles apart, then it becomes a tough ride.

So while choosing my partner, I didn’t choose a person who’s the complete opposite–but went for the one who complements me. Still not convinced? Here are a few legit reasons why I chose my partner from my profession that might change your thinking:

1. He understands my profession and that lessens conflict

Although our fields are different, we understand the industry we work in. He understands the pressure of working in a publication, so I don’t need to explain the nitty-gritty of my work. It helps immensely, as after a hard day’s slog I don’t need to go back home and explain why I am so stressed.

2. We have common things to talk about

Being in the same profession cuts down the boredom. Although you should really try not to take work home but, you at times you need a second opinion. I often have ideas that I develop further after discussing with my partner. Similarly, he’s always pinging me ideas on what he wants to do next.

3. The guidance helps us grow

My husband is a few years older than me so he’s been around the block. He understands the organisational structures way better than I do, so advice is only a WhatsApp text away. Also, we are our biggest critics and often share honest feedbacks with each other about our work.

4. Common goals

People always talk about spouses being jealous of each other’s success. However, that’s not a problem if both are secure in their own space. For me, it has been a great motivator as we both share common goals. Before getting married, we discussed growing together in our careers, so we always have valuable inputs that help us chart our career path better.

5. Easier to plan vacations

This is a huge advantage. If you’re in different professions, synching holidays can become a huge issue. Being in the same profession helps you plan your holidays better without major hassles.
