Staying In Is The New Going Out. Yes, That's The Wellness Trend Of 2017

Millennials are setting many new trends when it comes to fashion, relationships, health and lifestyle. While for the GenX, life was all about making bucks in millions, shopping sprees, gluttonous indulgences, and partying till they dropped, the millennials seem to be, ironically, a more sober bunch.

Especially when it comes to health, there has been a drastic change in how we treat our bodies, minds, and souls. Self-care has become one of the most important things, and a healthy lifestyle is synonymous with a holistic one. Our food preferences have been greener and fresher. Our top favourite beverages are green tea, wine, and coconut water, as opposed to beer, LIITs, and Bloody Marys. Even with our fitness regimes, we are more inclined toward mind-body practices such as yoga and martial arts, than spending hours lifting weights and running on a treadmill in the gym. All in all, we are more grounded, rooted, and connected with ourselves. Or, at least, that is what we strive for.

In this spirit, it is no surprise that the trend of partying till dawn every weekend is being replaced by staying in. We are owning our personal spaces, and embracing them as where we unwind and rejuvenate.

Larkin Brown, researcher for Pinterest, shares that “girls’ night in is trending upwards 35% year over year.” She also shared that “self-care searches are up by 121%”! That’s a pleasantly huge jump in prioritising self-love over anything else.

Honestly, with Netflix, Hygge interior designs, salt lamps, herbal teas, cooking fresh meals, and other such things becoming fashionable in an unprecedented way, it’s no surprise that more and more people would rather stay in, and spend an evening of conscious living, rather than entering a foggy state of intoxication, inevitably followed by exhaustion.

There might be a deeper philosophy at play here – we are intolerant of wastage. We don’t want to waste our time, energy, or resources in things that don’t contribute to our personal, professional, and spiritual growth. Anybody who has spent more than four Saturdays out and about, dancing and drinking, would know that after a point, it seems like the same thing over and over again. No point in that!
